Hello!

Jess and Joel here – we run Retro Bay, our showroom located in Jannali Sydney. We’ve been sourcing, repairing, refurbishing and re-homing mid-century and retro furniture and homewares since 2020. We love what we do, and when asked why we generally summarise it in three points:

• Design

In our opinion, the post-war period produced some of the most innovative, beautiful and functional pieces of furniture ever. The fact that most ‘new’ furniture is heavily ‘mid-century inspired’ is testament to this. We stock items from several manufacturers including Parker, Chiswell, Fler, Tessa, Berryman, TH Brown, Elite, Namco and Danish De Luxe.

• Australian Made

Although we source the occasional European piece, the majority of our items were produced by Australian companies in a golden era for the Australian manufacturing industry. We are talking about a time when a piece of furniture was literally made by hand, and left the factory in its completed form (as opposed to a flat-pack). Almost all of these companies have sadly ceased trading as manufacturing moved overseas.

• Sustainability

We live in a disposable society today, where large furniture purchases are made with a 5 year life horizon and with ‘trend’ in mind, rather than quality, materials, investment and longevity. A Parker or Chiswell table will last 100+ years with appropriate care, keeping 10 IKEA equivalents out of landfill.
